About PowerOutageTracker
PowerOutageTracker is an independent, free website that answers two questions quickly: is the power out, and is the grid under threat? We bring together public data from the U.S. Department of Energy, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, NOAA, the National Weather Service, CISA, the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the Census Bureau, and present it in plain language.
Our approach: prepared, not scared
Searches for terms like “grid down”, “cyberattack on the power grid” and “solar storm blackout” spike after major news. We take those concerns seriously, and we answer them with evidence: what has actually happened, what experts and regulators say, and what you can do. We don't publish rumors or doomsday speculation, and we label uncertainty clearly.
Editorial standards
- Every guide cites primary sources such as federal agencies, regulators, grid operators and peer-reviewed research, and lists them at the end.
- Data pages state their source, update time and known limitations next to the numbers.
- We correct errors promptly and note substantive updates on the page.
- We are not affiliated with any utility, agency or equipment seller.
Important safety note
This site is informational. Report outages and downed lines to your electric utility. In an emergency, call 911. Our live data covers only utilities that participate in DOE's ODIN program and may be incomplete or delayed.
